My grand daughter has had a fascination with an oriental birdcage I have got ever since she was a baby, she used to keep a cuddly owl in it, but the other week she decided it would be a good place to keep ornamental robins, the kind you clip on Xmas trees, but I don’t have a Xmas tree, i have a Yule log, i got the robins because they are her power animal,
Do you remember me saying I had to laugh to myself that she had the robin on her finger and said it was her pet
Because little did she know at the time, we had got her a digipet bird for Xmas
She loved it,it sings to her and reminds her of when I taught her to say “birdies” and I used to do a birdie whistle at her,due to the gap in my teeth I can do a great bird impression !
I need not keep talking about my fear of birds that I no longer have but it’s gone beause I now collect bird cages for my garden
These are just some of them that my aunt gets for me
This one my hubby got me for Xmas,I love it
Here is my oriental one that my grand daughter loves to play with.
I suddenly remembered being her age and being at my very posh great aunts house, she had one of those walk in pantry cupboards and no toys so I would amuse myself with playing with what I think was a cheese cage,a wooden box with a door with a wire mesh on the front,I made paper birds and put them in it.
I then started thinking more…could this even be a past life thing ?
In the Victorian days it was all the rage to keep pet birds in tiny cages that were way too small for them
This picture is a parrot cage but often the cages were much smaller and the birds were finches or canaries, some of the cages were very ornate or even shaped like houses, well to do Victorian ladies would carry tiny cages around with them
This may explain my grand daughters love of bird cages ,maybe she was a Victorian lady who carried one around ? but in my case I think it is linked to Victorian magicians ,I am obsessed with magicians an illusionists,I went to see David Blaine in his glass box over the Thames and had a life changing experience there (which was captured on video, but I am saving it for my book) I LOVE Darren Brown, and one of my favourite films is “the prestige” not just because it is about Tesla and because Bowie plays him.I have read the book which is totally different to the film.
In the film a bird cage trick is featured which appears to be cruel, maybe I was a magicians assistant and it put me off birds ? I don’t know
But its kind of sweet how grand daughter has a love of birds now that I do too
